Winter Storage Tip

I learned a new trick that I thought I would pass on to the MWCC members. I recently toured the Jon Kinzenbaw tractor collection in Williamsburg, IA. Although the majority of his collection (which was several hundred) is tractors, he had several cars that he collected, including several older Corvettes.

Jon and his family are the sole owners of Kinze Manufacturing (planters, grain carts, and tractor engine repowering), so all of his tractors and cars are stored in a temperature and humidity controlled environment. I noticed inside his cars he had a bag hanging from the rearview mirror, so I asked him about it. He explained that he does that to all his cars to keep from having the musty smell from storage.

DampridThe product is called “DampRid” and is locally available at Lowe’s for $8.54 for 3 packets. (Farm & Fleet has it as well) Each packet has a hanger hook (to hang it from the mirror) that has a two compartment bag attached to it. The top packet is the moisture absorber. Once the moisture absorber attracts moisture, it drains into the lower packet. Once the lower packet is full of water it is time to install a new packet. Since my Corvette is only lucky enough to be stored covered and inside an insulated garage (that is neither heated or has humidity control), I figured I was going to try it and see how it works for me. I thought I would pass this trick on to the rest of the Club for consideration since I am guessing most Corvettes are getting close to, if not into, the hibernation mode for the winter.
